Writing with Us
Payment
Authors on a book contract with us receive 35% net royalties. Authors on an Ebook contract with us receive 40% net royalties. We take net to mean the amount received from each book after printing and distribution costs, before we take our cut. On some sales this is equivalent to more than 10% of the cover price, though when a retailer or wholesaler has asked for a large discount in order to stock the book, for example, this figure may be less. We aim to be as transparent as possible and will allow our authors full information on the breakdown of money from the cover price of each copy.
We are not currently in a position to pay advances for books.
All of our authors are required to declare their earnings and register as Self Employed if appropriate in their country of residence. In the US there is a minimum income threshold before an author will have to worry about this (information here), but all UK authors must register (how to register). We will require evidence that earnings are being declared. Self-Employment does not preclude an author from being otherwise employed.
Payments will be made through PayPal, or to a UK bank account.
Payments from sales will be made monthly after an initial 90 days from publication, for book authors. Ebook authors will be paid monthly.
International (Non-UK) Authors will be subject to Double Taxtation (income tax in both countries), or Witholding Tax on their royalties, in line with UK tax law, which will be deducted prior to payment, UNLESS their country has a Tax Treaty with the UK and they have filled in the correct exemption form, available from the HMRC Website. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that Kite Hill Publishing has an up to date copy of this form so that full payment of royalties can be legally received by the author. Alternatively, overpaid tax can be reclaimed at the end of the UK tax year, which runs from April to April, using one of these forms. Be careful to get the correct form for your country of origin. What we ask for
We ask for Exclusive International Publishing Rights and Exclusive Electronic Book Publishing Rights for a limited, agreed period (five years is our starting figure, open to negotiation), while allowing you - the author - to publish free sample chapters and excerpts of an agreed length, where appropriate for marketing purposes.
Copyright is retained by all of our authors.
What to expect from us
We edit and format your book or story, produce a cover design after consultation with you, print and distribute the book. This will be completed within an agreed time frame.
We will market Kite Hill Publishing, you and your book, on various platforms and encourage you to do the same.
Thank you for reading, please see the Submissions page for guidlines applicable to your work.
